The various “listening extensions” register their surrounding environment through an inflatable resonance body equipped with piezo-electric vibration sensors and microphones. Invented for use on water bodies, these lightweight driftbodies float into spaces that are barely accessible for humans and become a “prosthetic extension”, enabling us to listen to geospatially distant ecosystems and their inhabiting entities – croaking frogs, migrating bird species like cranes or weather phenomena such as storms and the drizzling of rain. During the By Design or By Disaster conference in the Venosta Valley, workshop participants collectively imagined socio-ecological metamorphoses and brought them to life through dynamic audio soundscapes. The workshop introduced participants to an audio toolset to establish imaginative worlds by co-creating audible augmented reality experiences. Using situated field recordings and personal stories to animate their ideas about speculative futures, the participants created geo-located audio collages. Human and non-human actors, including many pollinators, birds but also apple harvesting machinery spoke on the contrast between the diverse sound-experience of species-rich meadows and industrial apple plantations. After experiencing this walk, the workshop participants set out to collect and record sounds for their own speculative futures, grouping around different audio-related lenses, such as a radio, a bicycle bell, or a frog. Today, human activity is increasingly affecting water at all levels, disrupting the distinctive taste it gives to beers. The drinking habits of the locals have also changed over time, due to the arrival of migrant communities who are not accustomed to drinking beer. Going beyond beer, the collective introduces Knötti, a new refreshing alcohol-free drink made from local waters, German hops and Japanese knotweed harvested in the nearby forest. The newly arrived knotweed is currently considered nothing but a harmful invasive species. Given its refreshing flavour, vitamins, and the omnipresence of the plant, it has potential for local drink production. Like many museums, it has preserved nature primarily through lifeless specimens. Biophony of Het Loo&nbsp;challenges this paradigm by foregrounding the vitality of living ecosystems and proposing a different mode of encounter. Biophony of Het Loo transforms the Grotto – once an aviary for captive birds – into a resonant chamber for the palace’s surrounding environment. Through an environmental monitoring station and a network of sensors, the installation transmits a live acoustic broadcast of the palace grounds into the space. Birds, wind, and rain enter the former site of containment as dynamic presences, moving through the architecture of the Grotto as they unfold in a spatial multichannel audio installation. Central to the installation is the Pluviophone – an acoustic rain monitoring station designed as a large-scale resonator. It monitors precipitation as both scientific device and sonic instrument. Microphones and glass elements capture the acoustic imprints of raindrops, allowing rainfall intensity and duration to be studied through sound. At the same time, these signals unfold as evolving soundscapes. Rain becomes both data and presence – an atmospheric event that can be heard, felt, and contemplated upon in real time. Our fieldwork examines relations between sound and environment, emphasizing multispecies ethics, ecological listening practices, and human/more-than-human tensions. Our group was formed in 2023 as part of Field_Notes: The North Escaping in Kilpisjärvi, Finland, where we investigated connections between sound and climate change in the Subarctic region. Over the course of two weeks, we worked and lived together in the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station, exploring the region and its surroundings through listening, somatic experience, and other practices. How do we navigate the ever-approaching uncertainty and wickedness of change? The Wait and Hear group proposes an open exploration based on listening. It extends an invitation to encounter, experience and comment on Kilpisjärvi — the region, the lake, the settlement, the living — as what we will refer to as Organism(s), through which a manifold of consequences and influences of human intervention, their diffusion, and their interrelations are starkly noticeable. While we spend time in the field and critically analyze our surroundings, ourselves, and our interrelation to the different forms our surrounding presents itself, we try to resist the urge to immediately engage for as long as possible. Instead, we gather on fells listening to wind, stones and water. We observe the hustle and bustle of the border town with all its social and cultural clashes. We engage with various stakeholders that are entangled within the Organism(s) themselves. Floating on nitrogen and phosphorus-containing water bodies, Lemnaceae is often an indicator of human-impacted ecosystems. When it spreads on these polluted waters, its enormous growth rate can quickly cover the entire surface, making it a challenge for the local biodiversity of the environment to flourish. <img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1af2fd3efdb280e8735787127a5ab47acbfba6acd2fb433c7ade8f985a0dbafa/Lemna_006.jpg" data-mid="156894806" border="0" data-scale="63" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1af2fd3efdb280e8735787127a5ab47acbfba6acd2fb433c7ade8f985a0dbafa/Lemna_006.jpg" />The plant however has excellent purification properties that could be embedded within agricultural contexts to create a symbiotic exchange. The incorporation of the plant as an organic purification partner could help to reduce the impact of intensive agricultural systems on the environment – at the same time, the extremely fast-growing matter becomes the subject of research investigating its qualities as a constructive material for diverse applications. The process of bog oak formation, which can take up to thousands of years also being used within dendrochronological sciences to trace environmental changes, becomes the central focus of this project.
